Bech Challenges Olver to Debates

AMHERST - Nathan used the day after the primary to challenge Rep. John Olver to a series of four debates, one at each of the district's community colleges:

  • Mount Wachusett Community College - Gardner
  • Holyoke Community College
  • Greenfield Community College
  • Berkshire Community College

Bech Congratulates Olver!

Congressional candidate Nathan Bech (R-West Springfield) called the campaign staff of Rep. John Olver (D-Amherst) to congratulate the 17-year incumbent on winning yesterday's Democratic primary.

"I congratulate John Olver and look forward to him finally joining me on the campaign trail," Bech said.

Bech also had kind words for Olver's Democratic primary challenger, civil rights attorney Robert Feuer (D-West Stockbridge).

"Bob Feuer articulated some critical points about the poor responsiveness, availability, and priorities of the incumbent.  It was an honor to share the trail with Bob on so many occassions," Bech said.

Feuer garned his showing with less than $10,000 spent.  The first-time candidate faced an incumbent with $350,000 in the bank.

"This primary, the first Olver has ever faced, shows that something is different in 2008.  People want change and some of Nathan's biggest supporters are former John Olver supporters.  He's lost touch over the last few terms.  Constituents are calling his office over and over without getting any response.  We hear the stories all the time.  A call to Richie Neal's office is now the front line for many residents in the First Congressional District," said Bech press secretary Brian Murphy.

Bech spent August holding 26 town meetings throughout the district, all of which Olver declined to attend.  Congress was on break during the meetings.  Feuer attended several of Bech's forums.

Nathan spoke to local public broadcasting legend Jim Madigan on the August 15th edition of "The State We're In."  Topics included the economy, energy prices, foreign policy, and the rising national debt.  The weekly program is a favorite of Nathan's (although he does consider "The Charlie Rose Program" to be his favorite TV show).  Madigan has interviewed U.S. senators, among dozens of others, on the long-running program.

Nathan visited Heath on Sunday to meet voters at the Heath Fair.

Nathan was curious if this voter thought the aliens on his keepsakes were similar to the ones John Olver is seeking with his $11 million Mexico telecope.
